My Dog Doesn’t Come When I Call

My Dog Doesn’t Come When I Call One of the most common complaints is “my dog doesn’t come when I call”. Training the recall is one of the funniest of all dog-training exercises because we do so much completely wrong! Let me explain. This is what we want to achieve: When we call our dog “here Bella” we want Bella to come sprinting as fast as she can to us. Now, in order to achieve this we must make “here Bella” the best command in the world. With the best result and rewards at the end! So here are some tips! Never call your dog if you are thinking of telling her off! You can undo months and months of hard work training your dog to come by telling her off just once. Suddenly coming when you call could be a really bed move! 9 times out of 10 make sure that your dog has a good experience when she comes if you call you. On the 10th recall if you need to put your dog on a leash then do so. When you call your dog to you think of coming as more of a “check in with me”…

Dog Training Tips

Dog Training Tips There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens…

When Should I Start Training My Puppy?
Blog / 06/09/2014

When Should I Start Training My Puppy? by Charlie Lafave, author, “Dog Training Secrets!”   If you have a puppy, you must start training early, but do it gently. Your puppy has to have confidence in you before he can begin learning. Remember that puppies are like children – they have growing bodies, short attention spans, and will only learn things when the conditions are right and when they understand what it is you’re trying to teach them. That said, the earlier you start training dogs, the better. More specifically, it’s best if you start “socialization” from 8 weeks, simple commands like “come” and “sit” from 12 weeks, and more intensive training at 5 to 6 months. While some early training can be started as soon as you bring your puppy home, the optimum time to begin obedience training is somewhere around 9 to 12 weeks of age. Keep in mind that training can cover a broad range of topics – I’m not suggesting that you begin training your puppy at 8 weeks of age for agility competitions! Your training should start off with the basics – teaching him “No!” and beginning house-training. Socialization skills are next – experts tell…

Licking: Affectionate, Disconcerting, or Just Plain Disgusting?
Blog / 01/25/2014

Licking: Affectionate, Disconcerting, or Just Plain Disgusting? For us humans, it can be a bit difficult to identify with the doggie habit of licking one another in greeting. We don’t do it, after all, and though our tongues come in handy for things like ice-cream eating and sucking that last dollop of peanut butter off the knife, we certainly wouldn’t welcome a visitor into our home by giving them a long, lingering lick on the cheek (unless you were brought up to embrace certain social mores currently unheard of in Western society). Dogs use their tongues to explore the world. A dog’s tongue is as important (and useful) to him as our eyes and hands are to us: it’s a multi-purpose utility tool, used to taste things, explore the presence of new people and animals, express submissiveness, and to let you know that he values your companionship and friendship. Licking is a completely natural behavior for dogs, and most of the time, the experience isn’t something to worry about: the odd lick from a warm, moist tongue on your hand or ankle is, at worst, tolerable (and, I must admit, I actually find it pretty adorable when my dog licks…

How to Train Your Dog Like a Pro   The toughest question that faces every newbie dog owner is how to train a dog to be obedient and well behaved. Most people love dogs, but hesitate on owning one as a pet because they fear that they might not be able to train their pup properly or may have to hire an experienced pet trainer for this purpose which could prove to be very expensive. The truth is, although it takes time and patience to train a new pup it is not actually a very difficult task. If you want to learn how to train a dog, all you need to do is first introduce consistency and patience in your own behavior. Dogs are very intelligent animals and learn very quickly from the behaviors they perceive. The first and foremost step in learning how to train a dog is to teach your dog to respond to basic commands like “sit”, “stay” and appraisals like “good dog” and “bad dog”. You must reward the dog by saying good dog or something similar whenever your pet does a good job. For the first few weeks you must try and keep the selection…

Turn Your Puppy Into The Perfect Dog   There’s a lot of talk about how to raise the perfect dog. It’s what we all want but the question is… do they exist? I suppose the answer is a bit like… is there a perfect person? Of course, the answer to that is… Nope! However there are some pretty great people out there, and there are some really amazing dogs too. So what’s the trick? This is my best advice.     Before you get hung up about going to puppy school and learning how to do high-fives, roly-polies and the commando crawl, ask yourself this… Is this what my dream dog does? Is my dream dog basically a performing monkey whom I wheel out when visitors come around so they can say “Wow that’s cool, how clever is he…How did you train him to do that…” and so on and so forth. The kicker is that in many of these cases the next thing that the dog owner has to do is warn the visitors “Now…don’t go near his food bowl when he’s eating, and careful when you pat him not to go near his head, and keep the children…
