Rapidly Accelerate Your Improvement With Daily Practice

Reading, writing and grammar are often the skills that come first when learning a second language.

These skills can be easily practiced on your own with textbooks and a whole range of online resources. For some students, these skills can be a breeze.

Listening comprehension, on the other hand, causes a lot of heartache and frustration.

Improving it involves training your ears to pick up new sounds and accents in the voice of native speakers.

But the speed of native spoken Spanish can be overwhelming.

If you want to start to understand native speakers you need to practice but improving your skills and comprehension by simply listening is also not the answer.

There are a lot of courses out there that promote passive listening, where you listen to a recording while you drive to work, do the dishes or fall asleep.

If you have tried these courses and haven’t experienced the improvement you wanted it is because this type of learning does not promote the necessary engagement to form new connections in your brain that will help you later when you actually have to use the language.

If you feel your skills need improvement you need to start listening actively.

Active listening involves finding meaning, looking for context and specific pieces of information in the sounds you are hearing. Then taking action based on what you have heard.

This process is exactly what happens when you start to have a conversation, you first receive new information, you then have to process that information, you then need to respond quickly while the other person waits. Passive listening activities do not promote this necessary skill.

It Is The Hardest Skill To Learn …

Active Vs Passive

Active listening is far more effective than passive listening.

Why? Because actively engaging in a task or activity develops new connections in your brain and helps you quickly build the necessary skills to improve your understanding.

Skill Acquisition

Developing any new skill can be a challenge. In order to improve your chances of success you need to focus on the most important activities.

Regular deliberate practice is about choosing the best activities for improvement and doing them often.

This approach is far more effective than spending hours upon hours doing tasks that contribute less to improvement.

Learning To Listen Vs Listening To Learn

Before you can improve your listening comprehension you must first learn how to listen.

It effectively involves actively engaging in the sounds of a language to determine context and extract specific information.

Once you have discovered how to listen you can accelerate you improvement and start to learn.
